What is Thalassemia?+
Thalassemia is a blood disorder. It's inherited, which means it's passed from parents to children through genes. Genes carry information that can affect many things. Thalassemia causes the body to have less of the protein hemoglobin than usual. Hemoglobin is present in red blood cells and allows the red blood cells to carry oxygen.
What is HPLC test+
An HPLC test, also known as Hemoglobin Variant Analysis or Hemoglobin HPLC, is a blood test that uses high-performance liquid chromatography to separate and identify different types of hemoglobin in a blood sample. This test is primarily used to diagnose genetic blood disorders like thalassemia and sickle cell disease by detecting abnormal hemoglobin variants.
Who can donate blood?+
Anyone healthy, has hb > 12.5 , aged 18–65, and weighing at least 50kg can usually donate blood.
How often can I donate?+
You can donate whole blood every 56 days or 8 weeks.
Is blood donation safe?+
Yes! The needles and bags used are sterile and used only once.
